There just aren’t enough shouting bearded men on kids’ toys these days. What the hell, toy companies?
In all seriousness, there just aren’t enough painted packages any more. I liken it to the almost lost art of the movie poster, in which photographs and photorealistic renderings have taken the place of evocative and stylized art. Oh well, at least we still have what came before to pore over.
And yes, I know this is a pic of a reissue set, but it’s the same painting, so my point still stands. Thank you.
One of the things I really enjoy about the Adventure Team package art are the mixing of depictions of the product in both fictional and real-world settings. The Windboat illustrates Joe in his craft at the left, yet the right panel shows a kid hand assembling the toy. Better yet,…
I've been on a kick lately of restoring packaging, particularly for 70s lines like Adventure Team and Big Jim. I've also been looking at knock-offs whose cards haven't stood the test of time too well. Here's the AT Jungle Survival set. I find these boxed outfit sets visually interesting even…
I have a lot of fun playing a bit of clean-up with card art images. The Adventure Team sets didn't often offer a lot of real estate to show off product paintings, but the carded outfits gave up a little more package width to showcase the set. The paintings were…
I like the paintings of the characters on the cards of the ARAH figures. That was infinatly better then the same image used on every item or a photo of a toy, next to a toy.
The art of the ARAH line is a big part of my nostalgia for GI Joe. Sure, sometimes the proportions are a little off, but they really captured the excitement of the toys. Animated explosions help, too.
Love the old painted advertisements etc. They should re release that art in poster form! As long as they’re not charging 50$ for a 16×24 color poster. Would love the 1980s are re issued as posters. Hasbro are you listening!?!?!
Amen! The painted art of yesteryear rolled over in it’s grave when it saw the Retaliation movie packaging.
Retaliation wins the award for worse toy packaging of all time. Even the Dollar General stuff was better…..

That is, would love to see the 1980s art re released as posters.
Cool!
