GI Joe Pit Commando (2009)

What should we call these nameless movie troopers? Blueish-grey camo shirts? Some folks don’t think the small Joes should incorporate nameless troops, as it goes against the outfit’s origin as a team of highly skilled specialists. I don’t mind the concept at all, and I rather enjoy the flexibility that a generic figure can provide. As a kid, I had more than one Grunt, and used them as different troopers all the time. Generic Joes could also be seen as troops in training, awaiting assignment in a particular specialty and a code name.

Coming in the later waves of the Rise of Cobra toys, I didn’t spot too many of them on shelves for a while. Once local stores began to really try and move stock near the end of the line’s life, I was able to pick up a few more. This figure was both a customizer and army builder’s dream. Not only did it provide a nicely nondescript uniform, but was packed with a veritable arsenal of weapons and gear. I wasn’t too jazzed about many of the Rise of Cobra movie figures, but the Pit Commando surprised me with its versatility. There are so many options, both for play and display. No other figure in the line was equipped with multiple vests, headgear and weapons. In that aspect, the Pit Commando’s incredible loadout was sort of a harbinger of elements to come in the Pursuit of Cobra toys.

The body is basically Dusty, from a 25th anniversary DVD Battle Pack. When the gear is placed on the figure, the origins of the mold are well hidden. There’s even a little bonus included, in the form of a remolded Anti-Venom Squad helmet. Of course, this helmet also bears a resemblance to the old Steel Brigade figure. I don’t know if this is intentional, but when placed on the Pit Commando in combination with the armored vest, the figure brings to mind the Steel Bridgade set from the new sculpt era.

That Steel Brigade helmet is the coolest thing about this figure to me.

  • Not to mention that most of the PIT commando’s gear was used with a lot of ROC and POC figures–now THAT’S versatile.

  • I managed to find him. He made great custom fodder

  • I beg to differ on opinions regarding Rise of Cobra figures. Every one of them is custom potential. Even the movie Vipers have something to offer. Don’t like that 5 PoA Cobra Commander for your Retaliation HISS? Drop one these guys in there. What about the other figures in the line? Browse yojoe.com from 82-94 and see who’s missing. Every one can be used for something, even the gear. That alternate Zartan head became the head for Repeater and Steam Roller.
Go back and give the figures a second look, you’d be surprised.

I me so many customs from R.O.C figures i lost count of them

  • This guy has definite possibilities. His headgear alone is worth the price of admission.

  • I’d like to see more RoC figures get covered in this page- even the pegwarmers!

I really have multiple uses for a several of these guys, so I’m disappointed that I only ever found one that has already been sacrificed significantly to the customs alter.
