If you need any further proof that GI Joe was a big deal back in the 80s, check out this fantastic ad for the 1986 tie-in mail-in figure, the Fridge. I wonder what would happen if I called that 900 number? Maybe the Fridge would answer, and I could ask him if Mike Singletary really was a samurai.
Thank you, Fridge, for introducing the football on a chain, the most innovative melee weapon in the GI Joe arsenal.
So it's football season in the US again. What better figure to cover today than Captain Gridiron, the Joes' football based figure from--wait. This blog can't cover that guy, too easy. How about another Joe football figure? This is certainly a highly idealized interpretation of Mr. Perry. It's not unusual…
Lanard has never been worried about getting a little silly with their action figure offerings, and we're all the richer for it. Before I had located a file card for him, I had assumed this figure was probably some sort of patriotic American type, a la Sgt. Slaughter. Another of…
No, it's not the Miller offshoot beer from the 90s, it's the former American football placekicker cum Slaughter's Renegade member. As a kid, I admit that I didn't really get the Renegades. They just seemed to me like some oddly attired group that didn't really fit into the existing Joe…
I got my Fridge from Hasbro Direct, but a little later. I believe he was $3.50. And in that same order, I received that heavy Sgt. Slaughter figure done in the LJN WWF style. Without question, my favorite shipment I ever received from those old Hasbro Direct booklets with all the cool Joe offers.
Of all the mail in figures, I actually got this one. Ugh. Tried to make it work by pairing him with the Sarge, but I just wasn’t into have the Fridge as a GIJoe. I’m all right with it now, but it still feels forced.
Better for the Adventure Team. In the old age episode they met up with a football celebrity….. Think he was Brad Turbo or something. Doing commercials for free or else

Also, I thought his combat specialty was “beat the shit out of you with a football on a stick”. Maybe I was wrong.
One wonders why the Joes were so stoked to be recruiting the NFL’s slowest star to their roster.
Being Australia, i dont know much about Gridiron but i do know the superbowl is kind of a big deal.
Great times!

I remember, wondering if he would show up in the cartoon or not. It have made a good two part episode….
Not the best idea for a new JOE.

Then again some celebrities would make targets for the DEF.
