Salute to Facial Hair: Day One
The GI Joe toy line has had a long history of impressive facial follicles ever since the dawn of the 1970s and the fuzzy-headed Adventure Team figures. We’ll be celebrating the finest examples of action figure grooming over the next several days. Be they stupendous ‘staches, glorious goatees, bountiful beards or vituoso VanDykes, we’ll cover them.
First up is a fairly thick ‘stache sported by the 2000s twelve inch version of Wild Bill. Mr. Hardy’s look has been consistent since his debut in 1983, and he’s always had a version of the traditional mustache. The larger scale allows the sculptor to get some amazing detail on the head, infusing the portrait with personality. Bill’s cookie duster is a bit long, and doesn’t pass military muster, but this is the GI Joe team, and the appearance standard is obviously relaxed. Nice one, Bill.
How have I never heard the term “cookie duster” until now? Hilarious.
Love this idea, though, seriously, Rob, this is something you should really tell your Field Reporter. General Mayhem would have been a perfect candidate for Mustache Week. 😉
Not familiar with the figure. But, that’s a nice headsculpt. would have been cool if they could have shrunk it down for use with a 3 3/4 figure.
With all that detail and the timing of the release, I wonder if this face is based on a real person.
Viet Nam era helicopter pilots embraced the air cavalry theme with vintage mustaches. True story!
The most decorated soldier meaning most medals awarded in history was a Viet Nam helicopter pilot.
Wild bills file card said he was a lrrp before a pilot. So he has good infantry skills as well!
Bill is going “Tombstone” on this one! Any shaggier and you wouldn’t be able to hear him on the helicopter comms.
Nice face!
