Lt. Falcon Costume Pattern (1987 Butterick)
Happy Halloween! I hope you and yours are having a fun (and safe) evening of Trick or Treating, or Whatever and Whatevering. Mrs. JAD and I will be out with the JAD Kids, gathering lots of sugary treats. Of course, we’ll all brush our teeth extra carefully tonight after consuming copious amounts of sucrose and fructose. After all, you don’t want to go to sleep with nasty sugar bugs in your mouth! Now you know!
Prolific pattern purveyor Butterick produced this Lt. Falcon pattern back in ’87. What can I say, this is fabulously cheesy. Mom JAD was a capable crafter in her younger years, but I can’t recall getting anything like a full-on outfit like this sewn for Halloween. I’m tempted to try my hand at making one. I could probably manage, since the package clearly states it’s très facile.
The dad and lad pictured look quite happy to be dressed up as the Joe team’s famous green berets, Lt. Falcon and Mini-Me Lt. Falcon. Speaking of berets, those pictured look a bit more akin to chefs’ hats than a military style cover. And check that scarf. Hmm, if I were the cynical type, I might think Butterick simply re-purposed bits of a chef outfit pattern. Ugh–the pattern collector’s equivalent of a cheap repaint. Dangit! Is nothing sacred?!
However, all is not lost, as the set includes Joe logo iron-on transfers as well as bonus face make-up designs. I don’t have said instructions, so I can only guess that the designs involve smearing green over one’s cheekbones and forehead. Bonus!
Berets are amusing. Chef Falcone!
1987 was pretty late, but I’ll bet you could still get some fatigues for cheap at the Army Surplus store. Since Lt. Falcon never wore a vest, it’d be a little more accurate, too.
But, didn’t he wore a vest while he was with the Night Force?
The kid really needs a word balloon that says: “Nice legs for a grease monkey”.
The “berets” look like the one the Joker wore during the museum scene in the 1989 Batman movie.
Yeah, that is exactly what they look like.
That comment was meant for Matt Owen.
This is one of those weird G.I. Joe licensed products like the My Buddy G.I. Joe doll, or the Lazer Battle Game Kit. You should send a photo of this thing to the folks at Yojoe.com, so that they can add it to the 1987 Falcon section.
