A great set of figures ruined by those pesky talking backpacks. I still went and unscrewed the suckers but they really should have been designed differently.
I got all the talking battle commanders for my 7th birthday along with Maduers Sergeant Slaughter,BAT v2 and Grunt V2 all presented to me on a cake made to look like the cobra symbol.
For many years i thought that “talking” Hawk was Flag as he wore sunglasses. I didnt realise it was Hawk until i discovered YOJOE. I also remember people commenting on how “nice” Hawks pants were:)
I didnt like the backpacks much either so my Dad removed them for me.
Just curous did anyone else have an Overkill that just fell apart? Mine did, does he suffer from GPS?
I had everyone but Overkill, so I would have to find out. Maybe clear plastic suffers from a similar affliction?
That was a nice touch on your family’s part with the birthday cake. I’m guessing you never knew that the tanned guy with shades was Hawk because your parents ditched the backing cards when placing the figures on the cake?
@Clutch
Yeah they were the only presents i didnt get to ope that day. I forgot to mention my Grandparents got me the gyrocopter thing with the “blue” Ace. I think my Sister got a Zarana [a shelfwarmer] and my little brother got the neon green HEAT viper so they didnt feel left out. Boy did we have fun that day.
I still have the old photo….somewhere. I remeber my Mother said she got the idea for the cake from the cover of a catalouge which had Duke standing on a badly shot up cobra symbol.
Funny thing is that i still have Overkills tiny chest mounted machine but i lost the rest of him.
And yeah, that clear plastic i had a few of the colour changing transformers from the same time that broke really easily as they were made from it [one of them was named “Gobots”]
With the exception of Stalker, I lived this moment of Zen on various occasions back in the day.
The Overkill I had held up just fine.
I removed the packs off Overkill and Cobra Commander, but I unable to get one screw from Hawks pack to budge. I didn’t want to risk it.
This TBC Cobra Commander went alongside the 1991 “orange plate battle helmet” Cobra Commander and really made my Cobra collection start to take the traditional shape I had known from the original cartoon.
Overkill was an imagination booster for me, too, as I had the BAT 1986 and BAT II (1991). Having the third generation BAT prototype was a whole other angle to an imaginative mind.
1986 Hawk was hard to replace, though, even through “jet-pack” Hawk was around. The TBC Hawk was a nice promotion in my mind, though, as Hawk became the two-star Major General at that point in my collecting world.
The sounds from the video really gave me a moment of zen.
@Scott
I never had any idea who Overkill was supposed to be as the DIC cartoon was never aired in my area and i never saw any of the comics. I knew he was a bad guy though
Yeah, the backpacks hindered the figures. I had one as a kid. I didn’t care for how loud/noisy they were. I was more a fan of using my imagination or the cartoons’ voices than using fast food drive-thru quality voice clips. I think the 2nd batch of Sonic Fighters was the best (their backpacks were varied and interesting, making for overall interesting looking figures). Here, Stalker looked great, Hawk… I don’t know if his spray tan/tanning booth tan made him seem figuratively plastic or if it was that cartoon episode where he was a robot (wasn’t that of this Hawk and not the jetpack Hawk?) that made this Hawk seem fake/an imposter. Cobra Commander, I could understand why people would like this version so much but I was more a fan of the 1st 3 incarnations and liked the desert-themed Cobra Commander from this time better as an ‘odd variation’. Overkill seemed like something that would come up (especially with the return of Terminator to theaters. Didn’t these Battle Commanders arrive like in Aug or Sept 1991?)- a super robot, one vs. legions of B.A.T.s (the X-Men had the same thing with Nimrod compared to standard Sentinels).
@Little Boa
The episode is called “A is for Android” It has the sonic Hawk mentioned.
There was a C.O.P.S episode also made by DIC called “The case of the bullit proof widget” which is virtually identical.

“Blitz ‘Em!”? Always sounded more like “Bosom!” to me, the dirty Stalker.

Awesome to see these commercials! Thanks for posting.
My fresh out of the package Overkill’s chest piece broke off the first time I opened it. DOH!
