Iron Klaw (2013)
I’ve been a fan of GI Joe Extreme since…okay, maybe fan is too strong a word. I’ve had a sick fascination with GI Joe Extreme since its inception. The biggest part of that fascination is the series’ villain, Iron Klaw. Sure, he was broadly drawn, and the gimmick of his alter ego should have been apparent to any character in the cartoon series with a couple brain cells, but I still liked him as a villain. Most of that was down to his look. The rest of the figures in the line were forgettable, but Iron Klaw stood out.
I didn’t buy in to the Collectors Club’s Figure Subscription Service, as the announced figure selection didn’t do much for me. I was intrigued by the new sculpt homage Jinx, but have yet to pull the trigger. Iron Klaw however, was the one figure of the set that I had to have.
Though most of the mold is Iron Grenadier Destro, the added accessories go a long way toward making this feel like a new figure. I’m glad they didn’t skimp on the head, harness and unique weapons. Although the head sculpt doesn’t exactly resemble the original toy, I’m still happy to finally have a small scale version of this guy to work into my villainous forces. The only thing missing is a cape.
Iron Klaw is the kind of oddball character I was hoping the club would place more focus on for this series, though I suppose they couldn’t go too obscure too often. Along those lines, I would love to see a Lt. Stone (the Sigma 6 version) in the second series. He’s a pretty popular guy among an unloved segment of Joe, much like Klaw here. Maybe it could happen.
We all know the big draw to this guy–he’s the unproduced Comic Pack version finally given form.
Yeah, the thing with G.I. Joe Extreme, it was just one of multiple franchises all trying to cash in on the ‘EXTREEEEME!’ phase pop culture was going through (thanks a lot, Cable and Image Comics >:(.) Just think–if we could go back in time, we could convince everybody BUT Image to shy away from aping off their success. Maybe Malibu Comics would’ve lasted longer, maybe Ghostbusters could have made a comeback without being ‘extreme’…..
Scary guy!
In retrospect, Iron Klaw does look a lot like Spawn wearing a beret. I don’t remember much about him in the Extreme cartoon other than being the bad guy. I can see him as one of Destro’s higher ranked cronies in the Iron Grenadiers, though.
Interesting to see such an overlooked character get an update. Wonder if there will be another con set focusing on something like Sergeant Savage or Extreme one day?
I recently read some of the Extreme comics. They werent terrible but they werent great either
Iron Klaw is BIG BAD in my ‘verse, he runs Cobra. So badass!
I WISH there could someday be a convention figure set dedicated to GIJoe Extreme but there’s little to no chance really.
Making obscure characters is admirable. But that figure just looks like a mediocre custom. That’s part of the problem of defining character details merely being added on straps. It looks like it was thrown together, because it was. And even the beret looks goofy.
Was the skull shoulder-pad sash previously used or was it new? It would look good on a future Dreadnok. There’s quite a few accessories I would like to see reused (I know the fang pistol has been previously used).
http://mikescollection.wordpress.com/2013/04/05/iron-klaw-v-1-2013/ You beat me to it Rob. I’ve posted my review of this figure on my site as well if anyone wants to check it out.
I really like this guy’s look. I’ve often considered getting one of the 6 inch figs, but can’t really nring myself to get a figure from G.I. Joe Extreme.
http://mikescollection.wordpress.com/2013/04/06/surefire-v-3-2013/ I’ve reviewed the other new FSS figure as well.
How did you get this without subscribing? I can’t find it on the collector club site.
Bought it from a subscriber who didn’t want it.
Of course! I was hoping I didn’t miss out on it somehow.
