Firefly (2009)

Here’s a first, both for the blog, and for Nice Pants Week. It’s one of the few 25th anniversary figures that I don’t have loose. Back when the series was going on, I was buying one to keep carded, and one to open. This is from a time before I had two children, by the way. These days, I’m much more selective as to where my toy money goes, and it rarely goes toward buying multiples of the same figure.

Actually, it was more than money that motivated my never seeking out a second version of this figure to open. By the time this wave came out, I was getting a little soured on the 25th anniversary line. There were a couple of good figures in the assortment, like Blowtorch and the Resolute Cobra Trooper, but this Firefly didn’t do much for me. I think the card art is the best aspect of it. Maybe it’s just me, but I think Firefly looks like he has some Asian heritage in his face in the card art. Very interesting.

This big bonus in this set is the very cool and detailed backpack that was also included with the comic pack Firefly. It’s got all those neat little removable implements of sabotage, something I always wanted with the original 1984 version.

The figure itself isn’t too interesting, aside from the color, and of course, the delightfully patterned pants. The problems that bothered me about previous 25th versions of Firefly are still here: the high-riding harness, cable-knit sweater and too-thin build.

It’s good to see a guy who’s usually completely deck out in camo to go for the pants-only look. It’s a very bold move. Firefly may be doomed to live his life in my collection forever sealed on his card. Even the power of fabulous pants has yet to convince me to buy him again for display.

  • He reminds me of the blue Ally Viper

  • I never liked this version. Great backpack b.t.w.!

  • this was a pointless repaint because the FF vs Greenshirts TRU 5-pack just before this already ha blue Firefly. And it was marginally better.

  • The best aspect of the 25th series was the old-school packaging. This packaging is the key to the club’s successful subscription service. So much in fact, that series two was recently announced. Keep it in the package,Rob it looks better!

  • Rob I am right there with you on this one, I had been following to an extent the same philosophy with the 25th stuff but aside from the set I ordered from BBTS I never saw this figure or wave in the wild so mine is still carded as well, and will most likely remain that way :/ But man those are some nice pants…
